Acid in Science

Acids are essential components of the natural world that play key roles in medicine and industry. Acids can be dangerous chemicals outside of the body, but there are plenty of acids inside the human body as well. These acids are not harmful to the body, but also they are absolutely necessary for the human to function properly. Formic acid and acetic acid are the major industrial chemicals in the group of saturated monocarboxylic acids.

Acetic acid serves as a chemical intermediate, a deliming agent during leather tanning, a solvent, and an oil-well acidizer. Acetic acid is a much weaker acid than formic acid. Acetic acid is a stronger acid than ethyl alcohol. Since acetic acid is only weakly dissociated, the concentration of acetic acid will be almost the same as the amount put in any mixture.

Is Tartaric acid a Strong Acid?

Tartaric acid is a dicarboxylic acid. Tartaric acid is odourless with a strong, tart acid taste. It is the most soluble of the solid acidulants. Tartaric acid esters of monoglycerides substituted monoglycerides are hardly used. It can presumably be manufactured by reacting monoglycerides with tartaric acid, just as citric acid esters of monoglycerides are made by reacting these monoglycerides with citric acid.

  • Tartaric acid is a white crystalline organic compound used principally in pharmaceuticals, foods, and soft drinks.
  • It has some industrial uses also. In pharmaceuticals its chief use is in effervescent saline preparations which have laxative properties.
  • Used in the Food industry are in baking powder and as a flavouring agent in gelatin, jellies, preserves, candies and soups. It is also used in soft drinks.
  • Industrial uses are in the manufacture of the cuprammonium type of rayon, in photography and in the dyeing and printing of textiles.

Acetic acid Uses

Acetic Acid also known as Ethanoic Acid, Hydrogen Acetate, and Vinegar is a carboxylic acid present in plant and animal dilute solutions. This chemical is widely used in organic processes, primarily in the production of polymers derived from vinyl acetate, use in paints and coatings, cellulose used to produce acetate fibres and as a solvent.

Acetic acid is a raw material for several key petrochemical intermediates and products. The largest end uses of acetic acid are in the production of vinyl acetate monomer and acetic anhydride. Acetic acid can be produced by biological and synthetic routes. While bacterial fermentation of ethanol is still used for vinegar manufacture the most important synthetic routes for the commercial production of acetic acid nowadays are based on methanol carbonylation and liquid phase oxidation of butane, naphtha, or acetaldehyde.
